A milestone in his career

Maestro Paolo Bortolameolli garnered praise and more accolades after conducting "Madama Butterfly", one of the most famous and most performed musical dramas of the lyrical repertoire, known for its emotional music and tragic story. This milestone not only speaks of the relevance of the Chilean musician, but also the stage where he performed for the fourth time in his career: the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, home of important operas and with more than 180 years of history.

"The experience was really fantastic. Besides, it is very nice to be reunited with a theater that I am very fond of since the first time I worked here with Gustavo Dudamel. It is an incredible production, in such an important theater at European and world level, with all the performances full. We are talking about a theater that has about 2,300 seats. A truly wonderful experience. Moreover, with good reviews... everything very well rounded," said Bortolameolli.

The pride of representing Chile in the world

"I always, first of all, feel Chilean. A Chilean musician around the world. It is always a pride to be able to take the name of my country to different theaters," the director responded to the question about the pride of exporting his talent to the most important audiences and stages in the world.

He also highlighted the talent that exists in Chile in this area: "I have premiered works by Chilean composer Miguel Farías in different orchestras, such as the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the San Diego Symphony, the Houston Symphony and, more recently, in the São Paulo State Symphony Orchestra, which is one of the most important symphony orchestras in Latin America".

He described his role as an "ambassador" of Chilean music in the different countries where he performs: "Whenever I can, I am doing my job of disseminating Chilean classical classical music and, of course, representing the talent of my country in the best way I can, always with great pride and affection," he added.

Projects for 2025

After finishing the season of Madama Butterfly, he spoke about his projects for 2025. In total, there will be two symphonic concerts and two operas. "I start the year traveling in the United States, where I will debut with three important orchestras: the New World Symphony in Miami, the Minnesota Symphony and the Utah Symphony. In Chile, I will have a major participation this year with the Santiago Philharmonic, starting with the opening of the concert season in March."

The look of the world

The performance in Madama Butterfly by the man who is also Associate Conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic did not go unnoticed in the recognized media. Thus, El País pointed out: "The surprise of this revival of Madama Butterfly has been the excellent musical direction of the Chilean Paolo Bortolameolli [...] he now flies solo and made his credentials clear in the premiere with classy details in terms of orchestral color and flexibility in the handling of tempo".

For its part, La Vanguardia expressed: "The score served by maestro Paolo Bortolameolli in detail and perhaps with a more American than Italian approach is an exponentially increasing catharsis".

Finally, the classical music magazine Scherzo highlighted Bortolameolli's impetus in conducting: "Bortolameolli showed passion, energy and clear ideas in the pit. In his detailed reading, with rather fast tempi, he sustained with precision and firmness the dramatic pulse of this sumptuous and refined score, giving strength and brilliance to the most intense scenes".
