The complex, located in Barrio República and designed by architect Luciano Kulczewski, invites the public to discover its heritage value as one of the first continuous housing developments in Santiago. Designated a Historic District by the National Monuments Council, it is also the first neighborhood of its kind to receive the Marca Chile certification.

As part of the 27th annual Chilean Cultural Heritage Day, the Virginia Opazo Ensemble invites the public to join a tour of this unique architectural site located in the historic República neighborhood.
Built in the 1940s and inaugurated in 1944, this complex of 33 houses with a continuous facade stands out for its neoclassical style, the white color of its facades, and an urban design that incorporated front gardens and interior courtyards, creating a modern way of living for its time.
Located in a traditional neighborhood of Santiago, the complex established itself as a harmonious development spearheaded by Colonel Octavio Soto, designed to house families connected to the Army, and which over time became an urban landmark of the neighborhood—one that residents are currently striving to preserve. This is highlighted by Cristian Pérez Inostroza, president of the Virginia Opazo Organization for Heritage, Cultural, and Welfare Preservation and Management, an entity that will celebrate its fifth anniversary in 2026.
“The value of Virginia Opazo lies in its people. The residents are constantly working to preserve their identity while also promoting improvements in safety, cleanliness, and the environment, because heritage is also preserved by living in it,” Pérez said.
This effort is also reflected in its recognition as the first historic neighborhood to receive the Marca Chile seal, as part of the Made by Chileans program, which honors initiatives that embody the country’s creativity, tradition, and vision.
During the tour on May 30 and 31, visitors will have the opportunity to learn about its history, architectural features, and the role it has played in shaping Santiago’s urban landscape.
