Column by Aurora Williams Baussa, Minister of Mining of Chile
Chile continues to move towards a future where mining is not only an engine of economic growth, but also an example of how to do things right.
Chile is one of the leading players in global mining. Not only for the richness of its resources, but also for its firm commitment to environmentally and socially responsible mining. What makes our mineral special in the international market is the way we obtain it, always considering environmental care, respect for the territories and transparent governance.
Responsible mining is a core value for our country and has been one of the pillars of the work of the Ministry of Mining during the government of President Gabriel Boric, who has placed sustainability and dialogue with communities as essential principles.
As part of this commitment, we have implemented ILO Convention 169, ensuring that the voices of indigenous peoples are heard and respected in every administrative act of the State related to mining development. The National Lithium Strategy, based on continuous dialogues with the communities, is a clear example of our crusade to make mining for all.
Internationally, the Ministry of Mining has worked hard to position Chile as a leader in the promotion of ethical and sustainable mining. This global commitment is reflected in our participation in relevant forums such as the Intergovernmental Forum on Mining (IGF) and the United Nations Secretary General's Panel on Critical Minerals in the Energy Transition. The Ministry's international agenda for the coming months includes events such as the London Metal Exchange Week and Asia Copper Week, where we will reaffirm our purpose of contributing to global development in a responsible manner.
With this approach, Chile continues to move towards a future where mining is not only an engine of economic growth, but also an example of how to do things right, with respect, transparency and long-term vision. We know that we have a responsibility to the world, and we firmly believe that this is the path to follow as we look to the future.
