The good news for those of us working in marine conservation is that more and more countries are leading the change and making a serious commitment to protect their land and ocean. That includes several Latin American nations, led by Chile, Panama and Costa Rica.
Chile, for example, already has more than 43% of its waters under MPA status, but decided to go even further. In early June, the government proposed the creation of an MPA on the high seas, in the Salas y Gómez and Nazca mountain ranges, two underwater mountain ranges that stretch 2,900 kilometers across the Pacific and are home to some of the ocean's greatest biodiversity.
