When Kawésqar National Park in Chilean Patagonia was created in 2019, a single ranger was responsible for an expanse of land the size of Belgium. Its fjords, forests and Andean peaks are priceless wilderness; moreover, it is one of the few ecosystems that have not been damaged by human activity, along with areas of the Amazon, the Sahara and eastern Siberia).
Chilean authorities hope that one day Kawésqar National Park will meet the high standards for protected areas established by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and be included in the organization's "green list".
