Step 1 - Preheat the oven to medium-high temperature (190°C).
Step 2 - For the filling: In a skillet heat 3 tablespoons of butter over high heat and sauté the apples for 10 minutes. Reduce heat and cook over low heat until golden brown. Remove from heat and add the sugar, nutmeg, cinnamon, kirsch or brandy. Stir until blended. Set aside.
Step 3 - For the dough: In a large bowl, beat the remaining butter with the powdered sugar until the mixture is pale. Add the eggs one at a time and mix well. Add the sifted flour and baking powder. Mix until a dough is formed without kneading.
Step 4 - Transfer the dough to a 23 cm diameter tart pan, pressing the dough to the bottom and sides of the pan. Even out the edges and pour the reserved apple filling along with the cranberries and maquis into the pan. Bake 25-30 minutes or until the edges of the dough are lightly browned. Serve warm or cold.
