Our country was positioned as the leader in the region in the index that measures the contributions of 169 countries to the common good of the planet and humanity in areas as diverse as world order, climate change, prosperity, culture and science.

Chile was ranked as the Latin American country that contributes most to the common good of the planet and humanity, according to the Good Country Index (GCI) ranking, created by international expert Simon Anholt and published by Diplomatic Courier.

"The fact that Chile appears in first place in the region is a source of pride, because it recognizes what we are doing in the country to contribute to creating a better future for the world. In that sense, it is aligned with what we have sought to tell about our country from Imagen de Chile, showing the contributions from Chile to the world in sustainability, quality of life and communities," said the executive director of Imagen de Chile, Constanza Cea. In general terms, Chile ranks 33rd out of 169 countries.

The Good Country Index periodically measures more than 160 countries, using a wide range of data from the United Nations and other international organizations. It aims to provide each country with a balance sheet to show at a glance whether it is a net creditor to humanity, a burden to the planet or somewhere in between.

The measurement axes are based on seven broad categories: science and technology; culture; peace and international security; world order; planet and climate change; prosperity and equality; and health and well-being.

According to these categories, Chile is especially outstanding in occupying the second place worldwide in terms of world order, which responds to donations, refugees, birth rate and UN agreements signed. The second category where Chile appears better positioned is in international peace and security (19th worldwide), which refers to peace troops, low number of victims of organized violence, low amount of arms exports, and good score in cybersecurity index. The third category where Chile obtains the best position is in its contributions to world prosperity and equity (21st in the global ranking), which refers to international trade, international volunteers, contribution to foreign direct investment abroad, contribution to development cooperation and low index of terrorist financing and risk of money laundering.

Why is it important to measure the "goodness" of countries? "The great challenges facing humanity today are global: climate change, economic crises, pandemics, population growth, water and food shortages. All these problems transcend borders, sothe only way they can be addressed is through international efforts," the report argues.

In Latin America, Chile is followed by Uruguay (ranked 45th overall) and Costa Rica (49th). Further behind are the Dominican Republic (60th), Panama (61st), Brazil (62nd) and Argentina (63rd). At the overall level, the list is headed by Sweden, Denmark and Germany.
