Chile’s natural wealth will have a new opportunity to gain international visibility with the next edition of Wiki Loves Earth Chile 2026. Organized by Wikimedia Chile, the photography contest invites participants to capture and share images of the country’s landscapes, ecosystems, and species under open licenses, adding them to Wikimedia Commons, the media repository that fuels Wikipedia’s content.

The call for entries addresses a specific challenge: despite Chile’s well-known geographic and biological diversity, many of its landscapes, ecosystems, and species remain underrepresented on Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons. By incorporating new photographs under open licenses, the contest enriches the available material on Chile’s natural world and makes it easier for this content to be discovered, used, and shared for educational and cultural purposes around the world.

This edition places special emphasis on “Chile in Winter,” inviting participants to document the landscapes and natural phenomena that characterize the country during this season. From the mountain snows and Altiplano wetlands to the southern rainforests and the coast during the coldest months, the call for contributions seeks to add new documentation of a season that is still underrepresented in Wikimedia projects.

“This contest aims not only to showcase this diversity to the world but also to promote citizen engagement and participation in the appreciation, documentation, and preservation of our natural resources. In addition, for this edition, we would like to highlight winter landscapes throughout Chile—a season that is still underrepresented on Wikimedia platforms,” says Katherine Bahamondes, head of Territories and Local Content at Wikimedia Chile.

We Are All Chile

Participation is free and open to anyone residing in Chile through July 31. The images must be original and unpublished, and must be uploaded directly to Wikimedia Commons under a Creative Commons license during the contest period.

Photographs may be submitted in four categories: Landscapes and Natural Heritage, Flora and Fauna, as well as the special categories “Chile in Winter” and “Wetlands and Aquatic Ecosystems.” In each category, first- and second-place winners will receive gift cards, books, and a Marca Chile kit, depending on the category. The winning images will be announced in August 2026.

In addition to the contest, Wikimedia Chile will hold training sessions on Wikimedia Commons and, on a temporary basis, an exhibition featuring the most outstanding images. The initiative is supported by Sernatur, Marca Chile, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and the University of La Serena.
