The goal was to have 5 million people vaccinated against COVID-19 by March 31, but Chile beat its own record: with two weeks to go before that date, on Tuesday, March 16, the goal was already met. This will make it possible to bring forward the vaccination schedule and from the third week of March begin vaccinating the general population. Thus, it is expected that 80% of the susceptible population will be vaccinated by June 30.
The speed of vaccination in our country has been highlighted by international media and research centers. An example of this is Our World in Data - an initiative of the University of Oxford - which names Chile as one of the countries that administers more doses of vaccines per 100 inhabitants in the world, occupying the first place globally for more than a week. Meanwhile, a report by the investment bank JP Morgan anticipated that Chile could be the first emerging country to achieve collective immunity against Covid-19.
This has been the fruit of a collective effort, and shows that, when all of Chile unites for the same cause, it can overcome great obstacles. This long effort began a year ago, with early negotiation and commercial contacts to secure the necessary doses. Added to this is a great management and logistical capacity, our country's willingness to carry out clinical trials, a health network throughout the national territory and a long experience in mass vaccination campaigns.
The success in this process has represented a light of hope for Chileans. But it does not mean that the pandemic is behind us. We must continue to take care of ourselves in order to overcome this pandemic together.
