The Araucanía region: why the land of the Mapuche is one of the greatest sustainable destinations

Accessibility settings

Araucanía, an area located along the Argentinean border about 700 kilometers from Santiago, is quite simply spectacular. The majority of visitors to this part of the country come from Santiago. They are drawn to its beauty and the natural riches found amidst the green landscape that hugs the Andes Mountains as well as the endless options for active tourism.

The explosion of Mapuche tourism in the region, named one of the best socially responsible tourism experiences in the world in 2021 by ITB Berlin (one of the most important travel trade shows in the world), has led to a surge of new expectations for local providers. This trend avoids the "folklorization" of an indigenous people endowed with a powerful identity, the largest indigenous group in Chile.
