For the seventh time, Chile won the award for Best Adventure Destination at the 2025 World Travel Awards. With this distinction, the country has cemented its position as a global leader in this area thanks to its vast geographical diversity, which attracts visitors from all over the world.
Chile was once again honored at the World Travel Awards, a competition popularly known as the "Oscars of tourism." This recognition—which adds to five others obtained in the South American version a few months ago—reflects the vast range of tourism options offered by the country.
Along these lines, Chile has arid destinations in the north, ideal for sports such as sandboarding; temperate climates in the central zone, which allow you to enjoy mountain adventures; and the Patagonian cold in the south, perfect for trekking or kayaking. That's why we've put together a list of five iconic places to experience adventure tourism.
San Pedro de Atacama
San Pedro de Atacama, in northern Chile, is recognized worldwide as an epicenter of adventure tourism, thanks to its location in the driest desert in the world, which offers a unique setting for outdoor experiences.

This destination offers the chance to go sandboarding in the dunes of Death Valley and trekking in geological formations such as Moon Valley. On the other hand, low light pollution favors astro-tourism, and its geography allows for climbing and excursions to geysers and lagoons.
Elqui Valley
The Elqui Valley stands out as one of the most versatile destinations for adventure tourism, combining nature, clear skies, and a privileged geography. Its hills, ravines, and rivers allow for experiences ranging from trekking and mountain biking to horseback riding along mountain trails.
This area, located in the Coquimbo Region, offers excursions through mountain ranges, mountain biking on inland trails, horseback riding, kayaking on reservoirs, stargazing, and tours of ravines and natural viewpoints.
Maipo Valley
Just minutes from Santiago, Cajón del Maipo has established itself as a key hub for those seeking adventure in stunning natural surroundings. Its mountains, rivers, and glaciers offer an ideal setting for rafting, hiking, climbing, and high-mountain exploration, making it an accessible destination that also offers a high-impact outdoor experience.

Specifically, in Cajón del Maipo you can go rafting on the Maipo River, trekking to El Morado Glacier, climbing in areas such as Las Melosas, canyoning, mountain biking, and 4×4 tours through mountainous areas.
Pucón–Villarrica
The Pucón–Villarrica area in the Araucanía region is internationally recognized as an epicenter for adventure tourism, thanks to the Villarrica volcano, its lakes, and its extensive protected areas. This environment allows for trekking, climbing, rafting, and lake sports, making it one of the most complete places for outdoor experiences throughout the year.
One of the highlights of adventure tourism in this area is climbing the Villarrica volcano. However, it also offers the chance to go rafting on the Trancura River, zip-lining through native forests, kayaking on lakes and waterfalls, mountain biking, and hiking trails in national parks such as Huerquehue.
Patagonia
Chilean Patagonia is distinguished by its untamed and monumental nature, offering one of the most spectacular adventure settings on the planet. Its glaciers, mountains, southern forests, and fjords allow for a wide range of expeditions, ideal for those seeking extreme experiences and a deep connection with the territory.
Among the most popular activities are long-distance trekking in Torres del Paine or Cerro Castillo, which attracts people from all over the world every year. Other activities include kayaking in fjords, sailing to glaciers, wildlife watching, climbing in remote areas, mountain expeditions, and routes along the Carretera Austral.
