The 10 things you didn't know about Chile at the Olympic Games

The Chilean team delegation arrived in Japan making history: this is the first time that more women than men have made up Team Chile, and the largest number of sports disciplines have been included. 

With 58 athletes, the Chilean delegation to the 1952 Helsinki Olympic Games was the largest in history. More than half a century later, Team Chile for Tokyo 2020 has not only equaled that number, but has set new records. 

For the first time, the Chilean delegation will include more women than men, and it is also unprecedented for women to participate in a collective sport, specifically in this case, the women's soccer team. Another attraction of this delegation is that it will represent 24 sports disciplines, the highest number to date. 

On the occasion of the inauguration of the Tokyo Olympic Games, which will take place between July 21 and August 8, we tell you 10 curiosities about Chilean participation throughout history:

Athens 1986 was the first time that Chile competed in the Olympic Games and it did so with only one athlete: Luis Subercaseaux in athletics.

2. The first Olympic medal for Chile was won by Manuel Plaza in Amsterdam 1928, who finished second in the athletics marathon.

3. Berlin 1936 was the first time a Chilean woman participated in the Olympic Games. Raquel Martinez ran the 100-meter dash in athletics. 

4. In Helsinki 1952, Chile won its second Olympic medal at the hands of Oscar Cristi, who came in second in individual equestrian jumping. 

5. The first and only Olympic medal obtained by a woman in the history of Chile occurred in Melbourne 1956, when Marlene Ahrens won silver in the javelin throw.

6. The renowned Chilean boxer, Martín Vargas, competed only once in the Olympic Games: Munich 1972

7. In Sydney 2000, the Chilean men's soccer team won the bronze medal after defeating the United States. 

8. The last Olympic medal for Chile was won by Fernando González in Beijing 2008

9. The most experienced athlete of Team Chile for Tokyo 2020 is rider Samuel Parot (56 years old), while the youngest is swimmer Eduardo Cisternas (17 years old). 

10. This year's Chilean delegation includes 11 athletes who have competed in previous Olympic Games.
