On the International Day of Clean Air for Blues Skies, we present Reborn Electric Motors, Latin America's first electric bus factory.
In Rancagua, 80 km south of Santiago, the Reborn Electric Motors (REM) factory is located. The factory is dedicated to building 100% electric bus models and converting existing combustion engine buses to electric ones. The company has currently developed ten 100% electric buses at its facility.
The factory opened in July of this year. It is expected to annually build around 200 zero-emission electric buses, thus contributing to the decontamination of cities and cutting the emission of 65,200 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere per year.
The first model available is the Reborn Electric Motors RE003, a taxi-bus that has a range of 200 km and capacity for 24 passengers. It is the first electric bus manufactured in Chile with a permit to circulate on public roads granted by the Transport Ministry.
"This factory shows that it is possible to generate value and technology in Chile, and give added value to our copper and lithium," stated Felipe Cevallos, CEO and co-founder of REM. These modern buses also have air conditioning, heating and USB chargers for passenger comfort.
The Chilean company has signed an agreement with the State-owned Copper Company (CODELCO) to provide 104 electric buses for mining activities and worker transport in the El Teniente mine in Rancagua.
The company hopes to become a benchmark for the export of these vehicles with a potential focus on South America.
