The national director of Sernatur, Cristóbal Benítez, expressed his satisfaction with the award of this important event for Chile. "We value receiving this great event of tourism sustainability at a global level, since it is the first time it will be held outside Europe. Therefore, it means a great challenge for us, as a country, to continue deepening in sustainability issues, in how we work at the territorial level, how we all coordinate to have an increasingly sustainable tourism and consistent with the needs of each of the territories", said the authority.

The event brings together speakers from all corners of the world, who share their experience and contribute to a wealth of knowledge that will shape the future of sustainable tourism in the world. At the last edition in Estonia, the event hosted nearly 300 delegates from five continents, putting the country at the center of the most advanced discussions on sustainable tourism.

Felipe Vera, who is vice president of Green Destinations, said he was "very happy to be able to share some very good news for human talent and the tourism value chain in our country, as Chile has been selected to host the most important sustainable tourism event in the world. We believe that there is a diversity of good practices in the regions of the world and, as a way to promote that message, Chile and Magallanes are the ideal scenario to showcase the tourism sustainability efforts of the Americas. In addition, the natural and cultural diversity of Magallanes and Chilean Antarctica is recognized around the world and what better way to celebrate sustainable tourism from this destination."

Magallanes, world headquarters for sustainability in 2024

The Region of Magallanes and Chilean Antarctica has great attributes that made it the host of this world summit. The destinations of the region are shown to the world as sustainable, responsible and attractive places for the visitor, from the point of view of the experience they provide.

It was for these reasons that the Green Destinations organization itself has also highlighted the work of some regional destinations in recent years: Cape Horn in 2017 and Puerto Natales in 2020.

Thus, organizing and supporting the event will provide the Region of Magallanes and Chilean Antarctica with unique opportunities for global exposure to the community of those who have been part of the list of 100 destinations highlighted by Green Destinations. As an event that fosters networking and the transfer of methodologies, the human talent of the host territories will benefit from receiving practical information on continuous improvement processes, as well as opportunities to showcase the benefits of the destination before and after the event.
