Accessibility settings

Some of the most important film festivals in the world take place in September, such as Venice, San Sebastian, Santander, Toronto and New York. Chile will be part of the circuit with premieres, competitions, as guest country and with a new edition of the Viña del Mar International Film Festival.

Below, we tell you about the Chilean films that will participate in the upcoming competitions:

Venice International Film Festival:

Chilean cinema arrives in Venice with films, shorts and animation. One of the most anticipated is Spencer by Pablo Larraín, which focuses on a weekend in the early 1990s, when Diana Spencer - played by Kristen Stewart - decides to separate from Prince Charles amid rumors of infidelity. The Chilean director's new proposal has been named as one of the most anticipated films of the year by media such as Variety and Fotograma.

In the Official Competition, Orizzonti Shorts section, Los Huesos, the new animation by directors Cristóbal León and Joaquín Cociña, is the only Latin American short film in competition. The work pretends to be the first stop motion animation film in the world, imagining the disinterment of two historical figures of Chile.

In the Venice Days section, Iván Fund's Piedra noche, an Argentine-Chilean co-production starring Alfredo Castro, will be presented. While in Venice Production Brigde, Los Ángeles -ascience fiction thriller in development by the duo León and Cociña-, Los colonos by Felipe Gálvez -a co-production between Chile, Argentina, France and Denmark- and Pamfir by Dmytro Sukholytkyy-Sobchuk -a co-production between Chile, Ukraine, France and Poland- stand out. The Venice International Film Festival will take place between September 1 and 11.

Santander International Film Week:

The fifth edition of the Santander International Film Week - to be held between September 10 and 18 - will be attended by important figures in Chilean cinema, such as directors Théo Court (Blanco en blanco) and Rodrigo Sepúlveda (Tengo miedo torero), and actress Mariana di Girolamo (Ema).

Chile is the guest country at this event. In the "Ibero-American Bridges" series, four films will be screened that represent the emerging cinema currently being developed in our country and reaping awards at different festivals around the world. The screening includes the documentary El agente topo directed by Maite Alberdi, La Verónica directed by Leonardo Medel, Blanco en blanco directed by Théo Court and Tengo miedo torero directed by Rodrigo Sepúlveda.

Viña del Mar International Film Festival:

The 33rd edition of the Viña del Mar International Film Festival will take place between September 6 and 15 and will feature competitions, tributes, screenings and Latin American premieres. After a completely online edition due to the pandemic in 2020, this year FICVIÑA will have in-person screenings in Viña del Mar and online screenings with free access throughout the country.

One of the novelties of the competition will be the debut of the Chilean Feature Film competition in which eight outstanding films are competing: La nave del olvido by Nicol Ruiz, Gran Avenida by Moisés Sepúlveda, Nidal by Josefina Pérez-García and Felipe Sigala, La muerte esta en los catres, by Ronnie Fuentes Salinas, Gaucho americano by Nicolás Molina, Mosca by Christian Aylwin and Martín Núñez, El niño del plomo by Daniel Dávila, and Dominio vigente: el valor de la tierra by Juan Mora.

This competition joins the already consolidated categories of Latin American Feature Fiction, Latin American Feature Documentary, Latin American Short Film "Ojo Latinoamericano" and Regional Works Competition "Miradas al territorio".
