7 not-to-be-missed experiences in the Chiloé Archipelago

One of the most beautiful, magical and unforgettable places in our country is undoubtedly our Chiloé Archipelago. Both the big island and the smaller ones hide corners that make this place unique in the world. Below we offer you just some of the experiences that Chiloé has to offer its visitors.

Churches of Chiloé, a World Heritage Site

We love the churches of Chiloé with their designs, architecture and wonderful colors; They are definitely one of the most recognized attractions nationally and internationally in this archipelago. A veritable network of wooden buildings that are still standing despite the years, many of them dating back to the eighteenth century. Although there are around 60 structures that follow this model, 16 were named World Heritage Sites by UNESCO in 2000. The most popular are: Achao Church; considered the oldest, the Church of Quinchao; the largest in this group, Iglesia de Castro; One of the most beautiful and also located in the main city of the archipelago.

Pier of Souls

Becoming one of the most photographed places in the archipelago, this wooden pier near a cliff is located in the town of Cucao and offers a spectacular view. Legend has it that when a person dies, their spirit must go to this sector and call the Tempilkawe, a mythical character who comes on his foam raft and takes the soul of the deceased, collecting his payment in precious stones. There are also those who claim to hear the laments of those souls who never left this place.

Chilo Wetlandsé

Chiloé has a route of 10 wetlands spread throughout the archipelago. These breeding sites, feeding and resting places for migratory birds allow visitors to discover and appreciate the most beautiful species. There are more than 80 that make their stops at these sites, among which are: curlews, sandpipers, plovers, skimmers and flamingos. In 2011 they were included in the Hemispheric Network of Wetland Reserves, which aims to ensure the preservation of these birds in the Americas.

Aucar Island

While this place is not as well known as the churches or the Pier of Souls, year after year its popularity has been increasing. Located in Quemchi, this island has a very particular access, as it requires walking across a long wooden bridge located over the river of the same name, but when the tide goes out, this island is attached to the big island. It also became known by the Chiloé writer Francisco Coloane as "Island of the Navigating Souls", as he assimilated the island as a place where the dead were buried, hoping to set sail one day. A small island, but it has a church and a botanical garden worthy of Chiloé.

Penguin Colonies of Puñihuil

Located in the Puñihuil sector, in the commune of Ancud, this place is home to two species of penguins; Humboldt and Magellan. While being able to see these specimens automatically makes this destination attractive, it is even more impressive when you consider that there are not many places in the world where two different species of this bird can breed and inhabit together. The place also allows you to see animals such as chungungos, seagulls, caiquenes, carancas, cormorants and Dominican gulls.

Navigation

Chiloé is a land with a strong connection with the sea and navigation; from its legends to its artisanal fishermen. That is why it is not surprising that several companies offer tours through its rivers, fjords, bays and hidden places of Chiloé. A tour that allows you to appreciate the most beautiful landscapes, accompanied by a typical flora and fauna of southern Chile.

Curanto in Hole

Although this panorama does not correspond to a specific place, you cannot go to Chiloé and not enjoy one of the most typical foods of this town. Seafood, meat, potatoes, sausages, chapaleles, milcaos and legumes cooked on hot stones and covered with nalca leaves. A more than culinary experience, a party where family, friends and neighbors gather to share.
