Ranking Freedom House

The U.S. think tank Freedom House released the results of the 2021 version of the Freedom in the World ranking, where Chile obtained 93 out of 100 points, placing it above powers such as the United States, Spain, Italy and France, and in second place in Latin America, after Uruguay.

The annual report scores each country on two factors. On the one hand, the political rights of the citizenry - including the electoral process, political pluralism and participation, and the functioning of government - and, on the other hand, civil liberties - freedom of expression and worship, the right to free association, the rule of law, autonomy and individual rights.

Chile rose three points compared to the previous year, remaining one of the six Latin American countries in the "totally free" category.

Economic freedom

On the other hand, the Heritage Foundation revealed the results of the 2021 Index of Economic Freedom, ranking 19th globally with a score of 75.2, surpassing the regional and world average.

The report highlights the rule of law, such as the independence of the judicial system, and notes that the country remains the second least corrupt in Latin America. It also rates the financial sector as open, competitive and resilient.
