In the first week of its mass immunization campaign for the elderly, Chile has already vaccinated more than one million people.
The Chilean government's goal is to immunize everyone over 65 years of age by February 19 so that the entire at-risk population - the elderly, chronically ill, healthcare workers - will be vaccinated during the first quarter of 2021 and have 15 of the country's 19 million people vaccinated by July.
The immunization campaign is free and voluntary.
In mid-2020, the Chilean government was facing strong criticism for its handling of the pandemic, when the country was reaching its highest infection rates. However, it is now being applauded for its vaccination plan.
