For the first time in history, a film directed by a Chilean won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in 2018—a category now known as Best International Feature Film.
The story of Marina, a transgender woman played by Daniela Vega, earned Sebastián Lelio the golden statuette for a film that transcended the screen. The film sparked international critical acclaim and sparked a conversation in Chile about identity and rights.
After winning the Goya Award for Best Ibero-American Film and the Silver Bear for Best Screenplay at the Berlinale, *A Fantastic Woman* became the first Chilean feature film to win an Oscar, making Chile the second Latin American country to receive an Oscar in this category.
