Are you interested in natural resources and extraction work? Do you see yourself traveling through large deposits, with helmets and huge boots, and moving around in giant trucks? Maybe you are thinking about studying Mining Engineering and you don't know where to study. Here we will convince you that Chile is your best option.
First, a little history...
Start by knowing that Chile is a mining country. Mining has always been in the history of our country and is part of our identity as a nation. Imagine that long before the Spaniards arrived in America, the indigenous people who inhabited these territories extracted copper ore from the Andes Mountains to make tools and ornaments.
In 1870, Chile was already positioned as the first exporter of copper in the world and still is today, which is of great importance for Chileans and our economy. During the 19th and 20th centuries, Chile consolidated its position as an important copper producer worldwide and began to receive engineers and specialists in mining and metallurgy from abroad.
Between 1990 and 2000, mining in general, but particularly copper mining, showed a dynamism never seen before, as a result of abundant foreign investment, who bet on the richness of our subsoil and our political, social and economic stability. Thus, this sector has become the most active in the development of the national economy.
To let you know some figures, copper alone has contributed 10.3% to the national GDP in the last 10 years. In 2018, 30.7% of the world's copper production was Chilean and its exports reached US$37 billion, according to data from the Chilean Copper Commission (Cochilco).
Today, large-scale mining is present in 7 of the 16 regions of the country: Tarapacá, Antofagasta, Atacama, Coquimbo, Valparaíso, Metropolitan and O'Higgins.
Because we have the best location and experience to be strategic partners in mining innovation projects, it is not surprising that Chile is one of the world leaders in mining.
