Chile: A Pioneer in Environmental Issues in the Region

Accessibility settings

The country's commitments and progress in climate change mitigation play an important role in showing the way to other nations on how to take concrete measures, according to the environmental challenges of the future. The European Union highlights the close collaboration in energy transition projects and assures that Chile is leading this development in Latin America.

The Conference of the Parties -COP28- which is taking place these days in Dubai, is the most important international space in which Chile demonstrates its commitment to a green future, in line with the global objectives of sustainability, climate change mitigation and decarbonization. The advances that our country has made in environmental issues have been praised by the participating nations, who highlight, for example, green hydrogen, energy efficiency and electromobility projects.

During this COP28, Minister Rojas has once again been invited to co-facilitate the negotiations, where together with Australia's Deputy Minister for Climate Change and Energy, Jenny McAllister, she should mediate one of the key discussions this year: the Global Adaptation Goal.

"Chile has the tremendous role of showing the way, because it is a small country that can serve as a pilot for many changes, demonstrating that an energy transition can be made in an orderly and safe way, but quickly, it is a tremendous example. A small country that has a transparency platform so that we can see how we are really reducing our emissions in all sectors," says Environment Minister Maisa Rojas.

"From the EU we have a strong and strategic collaboration with Chile, as we share common objectives. It seems to us that we can move forward very well together because Chile wants to combat climate change and has similar objectives to the EU, such as carbon neutrality by 2050," says Irene Miguelsanz Villanueva, a member of the European Commission's Directorate for Latin America and the Caribbean.

"Projects such as the climate risk atlas (ArClim) allow us to identify at the community level what the risks of future warming are and how we adapt to those risks. Our example can serve for the vast majority of other countries in the world," he adds.

These efforts do not go unnoticed in the world, especially among developed countries, which also find in Chile a territory with natural resources that have the potential to decarbonize the main economies.

This is the case of the European Union, which has highlighted Chile's leadership in climate change mitigation in the region, as well as the use of renewable energies. Chile and Europe share commitments in matters such as carbon neutrality, accelerating industrial transformations, the Hydrogen Action Pact, and cooperation to encourage and facilitate climate action to promote a just energy transition.

"From the EU we have a strong and strategic collaboration with Chile, as we share common objectives. It seems to us that we can move forward very well together because Chile wants to combat climate change and has similar objectives to the EU, such as carbon neutrality by 2050," says Irene Miguelsanz Villanueva, a member of the European Commission's Directorate for Latin America and the Caribbean, who manages the climate change program, called Euroclima.

Today there are several initiatives in which the European Union collaborates with Chile, from green hydrogen projects, financing to achieve energy efficiency in housing, among others. "In all these initiatives, Chile has proven to be a pioneer in the region. Elements such as the fact that the second fleet of electric buses in the world is in Santiago de Chile after China reaffirms that for us it is key to move forward together and be able to support each other, because this is a collaboration and the EU can offer a lot to Chile but can also learn and receive a lot from Chile," adds Miguelsanz.
