Eduardo Parraguez is a language teacher at the Padre Esteban Gumucio School in La Granja, a working-class municipality in the South of Santiago, Chile. The school is surrounded by vulnerable neighborhoods and its students often face all sorts of needs.
The 54-year-old teacher gives lessons to fifth, sixth and seventh grade girls and boys, aged between 10 and 12. For months during the COVID-19 pandemic, after long hours of online classes, he went above and beyond the call of duty and became the voice behind a radio program that tried to rebuild the connection between the school and the students who remained confined in their homes due to mobility restrictions.
Together with journalist Javiera Pastor, they conducted Aprendo en Casa (I Learn at Home), the cross-curricular distance education campaign, supported by a team of teachers from the Corporación Educacional del Arzobispado de Santiago (Educational Corporation of the Archbishopric of Santiago, CEAS), the same network to which the school belongs. They broadcast a total of 131 episodes from Monday to Friday, between May and December, when the 2020 school year ended.
