Ember's global electricity report revealed that solar and wind power generated 2,435 TWh of electricity in 2020, corresponding to almost a tenth of the world's electricity. Power from solar and wind has doubled since 2015, when it generated 5% (1,082 TWh) of the world's electricity.
Some countries are producing significantly more electricity from solar and wind power. The global leaders are Denmark and Uruguay, which generated 61% and 44% respectively of their electricity in 2020 from these renewable sources.
Most of these 15 leading solar and wind energy countries are European, but the list also includes Latin American nations such as Uruguay and Chile.
