Chile's image seeks the innovators of the future with the 500 Years of the Strait of Magellan Award

Accessibility settings

500 years ago, Hernando de Magallanes, Sebastián Elcano and a crew from different countries crossed a strait in the southernmost part of Chile, a milestone that became a historic moment in the navigation from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific, making the first round-the-world voyage and, incidentally, opening the door to globalization from Chile. This explorer spirit is the one that Imagen de Chile wishes to highlight, rescuing the innovative force of that voyage. And for that, the institution in charge of promoting Chile abroad launches the "Strait of Magellan Award for Innovation and Exploration with Global Impact", which seeks to recognize those people who contributed innovations of global scope.

Climate change, environmental care, scientific and technological advances or solutions with social impact, which through innovation have opened frontiers. These are some of the topics that this recognition seeks to highlight. On the one hand, Imagen de Chile, together with the embassies of our country abroad, will seek candidates from these nations. Through a special committee convened by Imagen de Chile, a winner will be chosen for each country represented by the network of Chilean embassies. At the national level, there will be an open application until September 7, to select representatives in two categories: "National" and "Magallanes". In the latter category, only those from that region will be able to apply.

"The crossing of the Strait of Magellan in 1520 represents a voyage of exploration that changed the way of understanding the world. 500 years later, in Imagen de Chile we want to celebrate that spirit of entrepreneurship and innovation to recognize the 'explorers' of the XXI century, from Chile and the world, who through their talent expand frontiers. This milestone is very symbolic for Chile, because today we are one of the countries most connected to the world and the invitation is to stay connected for another 500 years", says Constanza Cea, executive director of Imagen de Chile.

In the "National" and "Magallanes" categories, interested persons may make their own application or be nominated by a third party (natural person or institution), as long as they can prove the authorship of the innovation made at the time of application. National applicants may register to participate and review the rules and regulations on the following website

https://marcachile.cl/magallanes-500-años or through the official dissemination channels of Imagen de Chile (@MarcaChile). Registration is open until September 7. Between the 8th and 14th of that month, a committee created by Imagen de Chile will choose six shortlisted in the "National" category and three for "Magallanes". The stories of these semifinalists will be published on the digital platforms of the organizing institution and it will be the public who will choose their favorites through their "likes" between September 22 and October 6.

At the international level, Chile's ambassadors will be in charge of selecting the candidates from their respective countries, which will translate into a global range of international winners that are opening up through their talent and innovations. "The navigation of Magellan and Elcano 500 years ago was a milestone that anticipated globalization. The Imagen de Chile international contest seeks to reconnect us with the same strength of that voyage, but this time, rewarding ideas that point to global solutions, with innovative features and that contribute to global connection."says Minister of Foreign Affairs Andrés Allamand.
