Mahani Teave, who grew up on Rapa Nui (also known as Easter Island), was introduced to the piano in his childhood with the arrival of that first instrument on the island. He studied classical piano in Chile, Cleveland and Berlin, and when he returned to Rapa Nui he built the first music school on the island.
Correspondent Kelefa Sanneh spoke with Teave about maintaining ancestral traditions and promoting music education in that remote Pacific location.
