Chile vaccinated over 1 million people during the first week of its mass immunization campaign for senior citizens.
The Chilean government's goal is to immunize everyone over the age of 65 by February 19 so that the entire at-risk population -senior citizens, individuals with chronic illnesses and healthcare workers- is vaccinated during the first quarter of 2021. The plan is to have vaccinated 15 of the country's 19 million inhabitants by July.
The immunization campaign is free and voluntary.
The Chilean government faced harsh criticism over its handling of the pandemic in mid-2020 when the country reached its highest infection rates. It is now being applauded for its vaccination plan.
