The World Economic Forum released the list of 25 scientists selected to be part of the Young Scientists Community, a platform that aims to recognize researchers under 40, from 14 countries and various backgrounds, who in their daily work tackle global challenges.
The 2020 selection featured two Chilean researchers, Francisca Garay, an academic from the Faculty of Physics at the Universidad Católica, and Diego García-Huidobro, an academic from the Faculty of Medicine of the same university.
“It’s an immense honor to have been chosen and, at the same time, I feel a great responsibility because I hope to be able to use all these tools in the best way in order to contribute to Chile from the scientific world”, says Francisca, who works at the Large Hadron Collider’s ATLAS experiment and has contributed in data analysis to understand the properties of the Higgs boson.
On the other hand, Diego is an expert on family medicine and therapy, and studies the role of the family in health. He has been acknowledged with several recognitions, such as the Young Investigator Award from the World Organization of Family Physicians and the Matilda White Riley Award from the United States’ National Health Institute.
By joining the Young Scientists Community 2020, Francisca and Diego will have the opportunity to attend events organized by the World Economic Forum, take part in learning instances and share experiences with researchers from around the world.
“I have no doubt about the quality of Chilean scientists and that they can definitely contribute to the world”, says Francisca.
