On its tenth anniversary, Fundación Reforestemos (Let’s Reforest Foundation) has released a documentary that tells the story of Chile’s largest reforestation campaign and the road to reaching one million native trees planted.
On December 27, 2011, a column of smoke was seen in the vicinity of Grey Lake, inside the Torres del Paine National Park. The negligent behavior of a tourist caused one of the most devastating forest fires ever recorded in Chile, with almost 44,479 acres burned. It was after this event that “Reforestemos Patagonia” emerged, today called Fundación Reforestemos, an organization now present in 11 regions, 56 municipalities and three countries, with a community of more than 350,000 people and 5,000 volunteers.
In commemoration of Earth Day, and in celebration of its ten-year anniversary, Fundación Reforestemos has released a documentary that explores the different milestones that the organization has achieved: from the gigantic task of restoring the native forest of one of the most pristine places in the world, to its subsequent work restoring areas damaged by fires and those of high ecological value. Today, the organization has reached the great milestone of one million trees planted.
“This April 22 is a day to reflect on biodiversity conservation and global warming; but it is also an opportunity to celebrate those who, like Reforestemos, are making the difference today,” stated Constanza Cea, the executive director of Imagen de Chile. “At Imagen de Chile we are proud to participate in the work of Reforestemos, not only through our strategic alliance, but also with the Imagen de Chile Forest, with which we have contributed to giving visibility to this crusade,” added the executive director of Imagen de Chile.
