Vaccination became politicized in much of Latin America
Every day this week, 100,000 Chileans between the ages of 60 and 64 received the covid-19 vaccine. With nearly 20% of its adults vaccinated, the sixth best rate in the world, Chile is well on its way to achieving its goal of immunizing 80% of its 19 million people by June 30. After starting with health workers, the vaccines will be given in strict descending order of age, one year apart each day, which also includes teachers.
This simple and orderly program contrasts with the rest of Latin America. In vaccination, as in other matters, the region reveals its divisions, inequalities and governance problems. In this case, unfortunately, the price will be paid in lives. Colombia, Ecuador and Venezuela, as well as many other smaller countries, have only just begun vaccination.
